AAASM.ORG - Boys to Men
IMPROVING THE LIVES OF BLACK PEOPLE THROUGH
AWARENESS, KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION
Part I

A - Survey        “How do you see yourself? “

This survey is used as an initial starting point in an effort to evaluate just hoe we need to guide the candidate.  We will ask this question
from a variety of perspectives.  “How do you see yourself to…..

1)        Your family
2)        Your friends
3)        America
4)        Yourself and God

And why?  We will ask each boy to write a page description on each point.  We will conduct a group discussion on this issue.  Prior to the
discussion, the speaker will review each survey for similarities  and differences and tabulate the results and share this information in the
discussion after each candidate is give the chance to participate.  We will allow time for each candidate to interchange stores and ask
each other questions.

B - History Channel Program - Slave Catchers, Slave Resisters

The purpose of showing this program on one hand is to show the discreditable strength and resolve in the American Slave. On the other
hand, this program also depicts the extreme tactics used by American slave owners and the situations that resulted from those tactics.

This program reflects that at every turn, Africans fought back against the institution of slavery.  The slave never resigned to the fact that
this was their lot in life.  They continued to fight until the pressures of the fight brought about the abolition of slavery.
The final discussion will include a question and answer session where we will obtain feedback from the boys on their feelings about the
very powerful program.  We will end the discussion by explaining that the strength and resolve shown in the slaves is the same resolve they
must have in dealing with those today who may try to use their power to suppress them.  We also explain that the strength exhibited by the
slaves in the program is the same strength passed down through the generations to us today, the ancestors of slaves.  We have a duty to
those of long ago who suffered to honor their memories by showing strength in the face of oppression and discrimination.

C - Africa as origin of the Book of Genesis and Creation

We present this information in an effort to boost the self-esteem of the candidates.  We present issues and facts as follows:

1)        When God chose to create the world and civilization, He chose Africa!
2)        Because of #1, descendants of Africa (us) are his chosen people. As His chosen, he requires a relationship with us.  It is because
of         this relationship, we prosper.
3)        As God’s chosen, you must live a life that reflects the character of a chosen person.
4)        We all can be chosen through the life, death and Blood of Jesus Christ.

We will have a spiritual leader provide Biblical references to verify this information

D - Statistics on Black men/boys in America

For this last portion of our program, we ask the parents to participate if possible.  We present this information in an effort to show the boys
how they are seen in the world today.  We will present statistics in the following areas:

1)        The number of young African American males living in the home with no father.
2)        The percentages of Blacks in jail in contract to other nationalities.
3)        The national test scores of young Black student in contracts to other nationalities.
4)        The number of Black children born out of wedlock in contrast to other nationalities.

As a whole, these statistics depicts Blacks in a negative light on one each of the spectrum or the other.  We will conduct open discussion
on these issues.  We will ask the candidates why they feel the numbers are as they are.

We will end the discussion by stating that mission and role of the Boy-to-Men Project is to change these statistics one boy at a time.  We
will ask each boy to discuss what he will do on a personal level to change these statistics.

E. - Discuss the principles that “turn boys to men” and assign the mentors.

Each boy will be required to memorize each principle and be able to recite the meaning.  Each candidate must prepare a contract
where they agree to the principles and will go over the information with:

1) Mother and Father (where appropriate)
2) Teachers
3) Mentors
4) Other key individuals in the candidate’s life (grandparents etc.)

We will have the candidate and each person listed sign the contract agreeing that:
1) The candidate will commit to these principles as a life practice
2) The mother, father, teachers, mentors, etc. will commit in helping the candidate in     reaches his goals
