Program Goals
Boys
The AAASM Boys to Men Project was designed to address the needs of African American boys
and men in America. This program was designed for boys and men of all ages. Sixty percent of
African American boys grow up with no male figure in the home. The result of this in most cases
is defiant hard to deal with young men. The reality is that the mother, even with her infinite love, in
most cases cannot provide everything that young growing boy may need in his male development.
The project focuses on the development of the boys on two levels:
The man as leader; mind, body, spirit
Importance and need for education
A young member of the project will be assigned two male mentors, one five to seven years older
and another 10 or more years older. These men will be on call to address the needs of the
young man. The young man understands he has some he can call at any time to discuss any
situation. The mentors will follow up with the mother as the mother requests to give status and
update the mother on issues discussed. Special group events are planned as well as one on
one events with the young man and his mentors.
The AAASM will work directly with professionals in the area of spirituality, psychology, and
childhood development to lead and guide the mentors as they help the young boys.
