Protect Yourself and Your Family
We fail ourselves and our children if we do not give them exactly what they deserve, a dedicated, sacrificing
mother.  This is so much more of a requirement in a single parent home, regardless of gender.

Looking back over my 21 years and 55 years combined as a mom (15 of my 21 years as a single
mother), I regret nothing.  This is not because I'm bullheaded, its because I was a dedicated, sacrificing
mother.  I put my own interest aside when I became a mom and more so when I became a single mother.
I owed it to my children and it paid off.  No situation is perfect but I have been extremely blessed with my set
of goofy goons (my kids).

Today's norms pose extraordinary problems for you as a single mother and your children as the child(ren)
of one.  Goals, focus and commitment to yourself and family will lead you and bring through.  Single
parenthood is not easy, it IS very hard and the effort it takes for even marginal success, is highly underrated.
The media delights in showing examples of failure with no suggestion for solution nor examples of success.
The bottom line is that we must focus ourselves and our families towards success.

In a recent meeting with a few younger single mothers, they admitted to me that they were lost.  They really
did not know what direction to go in or what to do.  Another stated, as she hugged me, she feels so alone and
has no one to help her with her kids.  What our focus is and what we plan to do and what I explained to every
woman there is the AAASM is not a hand out Association.  We will give but we expect to see results in you
from our giving.  They all understood and agreed to do all they could to assist in the success of our
Woman's Program.

In an effort to help our members and other interested parties become dedicated, sacrificing mothers we
stress focus in the following areas:
1) An understanding who you are.
2) Make plans and strategies and stick to them.
3) Get help when you need it.

Good News!  The children do grow up.  At that point and after following the 3 steps, you will find yourself in a
very comfortable position.  Part of the new sacrifice once they are grown involves allowing them to bump
their heads but not hang themselves.  What's better, I will end this as I began.  "You have no regrets
because you were a dedicated sacrificing mother."

Happy 2009
I.
Know Who You Are

As the head of your household, it is important to set house rules.  These could involve how late your child may use the phone or computer at night to when daily duties must been
done.  Also remember that house rules must apply to the adults as well.  Children tend to do what they see so if you are also setting a good example by following the rules, it's a
WIN WIN for everyone.  Also as much of a pain as it is, it is very important that you check you child's educational progress weekly.  Being involved is very important.  This allows
you to catch any problems early.  Many school districts provide easy access to your child's grades by computer.  Please email the Director for more information.

II.
Make plans and strategies and stick to them.

The Woman's self Awareness Program is a program full of focus, ideas and strategies.  The program focuses on the Spiritual, Financial, Physical and Emotional aspects of life.
By achieving excellence in each area, the individual achieves excellence in life.  The following is the AAASM Woman's Self Awareness Program 4-Point Focus to get you started
for 2009:

Spiritual
Commit to building a stronger spiritual relationship between you and your Lord, God, Creator. (Whatever name you choose to use but I think the point is there).

Financial
Look at your current financial situation (order a credit report also).  Seek ways to make it better if that is what is needed.  Seek ways to make more money by the end of 2009.
Take classes in your current field.  This makes you more knowledgeable and more valuable as an employee. Valuable employees make more money.  Also seek multiple streams
of income whenever possible.  Baby sit, walk dogs or even turn something you love to do into a financial enterprise (;0) just make sure its legal!

Physical
Commit to maintaining proper health.  Walk 30 minutes each day.  Dance to your favorite music. Stop tobacco use in your home.

Emotional
Spend time alone each day.  Reflect on the successes of each day. Decide to let go of the mistakes.  Take time to reflect on the good you have and good you have to offer.  Sing
along with your favorite artist, whether you know how to sing or not.  Not all secrets are meant to be told.

III. Get help when needed
I hope I was able to provide a little help to get you going in the right direction to begin the new year.  We are here to help all those who seek our services regardless of race,
gender, religion or anything else man has thought of to separate us.  With this, all I can say is join the Association of African American Single Mothers.
