Single Mothers
We as single mothers face many obstacles raising our children.  Ninety percent of us live in poverty and in most cases do not
have the necessary leadership to resolve our issues.   In light of Hurricane Katrina, poverty and its effect on children was
brought to the forefront and the Association of African American Single Mothers have plans and processes in place to address
these issues.

The number of single parent homes headed by women continues to grow, regardless of race.  African American women head more
than half of the six million.  The Association of African American Single Mothers will provide useful information for single
mothers everywhere, we are not just for Black women.  This guide contains some tips you may use to help you with the most
important job you will ever have, raising your child on your own.  The Guide also provides some interesting insight on raising a
Black son in America.

We as single mothers have a very important job even though we may make it seem easy to our kids and others who may be
watching.  Being a single mother today means dedication and sacrifice on every level.  Sadly, many of us do not realize this.  How
others see you as a mother is based on how well or how willing you are to sacrifice and demonstrate your dedication to your
children.  We have an obligation first to our children then to ourselves.  This concept is vital.  Whatever situation you may now
find yourself in, is in no way caused by the existence of your children and as such, they should not suffer because of it.  God will
walk you through every situation you find yourself in and you must realize that you are not alone.  As a single parent, you are
solely responsible for and hold God’s most precious gift, your child.  God knows you need help and He will bless your family in
spite of your not-so- perfect performance.  With that in mind, know that you have power and use it to change those issues in your
life that keeps both you and your children searching for more.
